The following prerequisite courses must be completed prior to admission to the program.

BIO 155 (or BIO 201 and BIO 202) - Anatomy & Physiology

Complete the Admission Form and Letter of interest paper by May 1, for priority clinical placement. All information must be completed and submitted electronically to ATEPclinicalforms@gcu.edu.

  • Admission Form - Complete the form and submit
  • Letter of interest- Submit 1 typed page.

Research the Athletic Training profession via the National Athletic Trainer's Association website along with one journal article. Use this information to draft a one page paper describing the duties, roles and responsibilities of an athletic trainer (ATC). Also, answer the following questions: Why do you want to be a Certified Athletic Trainer? What are your goals in this Profession? What is your understanding of the time requirements for course work? What is your understanding of the time requirement for clinical rotations?

Step 3

In order to meet all CAATE accreditation standards and guidelines as well as liability and health precautions, all students must complete the following information by July 1 prior to starting their first clinical course in the fall. All information must be completed and submitted electronically to ATEPclinicalforms@gcu.edu

  • Observation summary - Submit 1 typed page
    Complete at least 30 observation hours with a certified athletic trainer. This can be at any location. You may contact an Athletic Trainer at a local high school or clinic. There may also be opportunity to observe in our athletic training room on campus. Please visit the athletic training facility to request to complete your observation, but be aware that one facility cannot accommodate all students. Type a summary of your experiences as described in the Observation Summary Description.
  • Fingerprint Clearance card - submit a scanned copy of the card (front and back)
    A fingerprint clearance card provides a level one background check on all of our applicants. It is required for clinical rotation sites and completed through the Arizona Department of Public Safety. You may stop by the College of Health Sciences front office at GCU or Contact the Office of Field Experience at 602-639-6629 to request a fingerprint clearance card application packet. This process will take 6-8 weeks.
  • Professional rescuer CPR certification current through the academic year - submit a scanned copy
    The student must sign up and complete an appropriate Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) course as described on the Board of Certification website www.bocatc.org . Search under the "Candidates" section. Acceptable certifications include but not limited to: * CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer through the American Red Cross *BLS Healthcare Provider through the American Heart Association. A course can be found through an internet search.
  • First Aid Certification current through academic year - submit a scanned copy
    The student must sign up and complete a first aid certification course. A course can be found through an internet search of sites such as American Red Cross, American Heart Association, etc.
  • Taping Evaluation form - submit a scanned copy of the signed and completed form. This can be completed by any Certified Athletic Trainer.
  • Emergency Evaluation form
    Submit a scanned copy of the signed and completed form. This can be completed by any Certified Athletic Trainer.
  • Technical standards agreement - Submit a scanned copy of the signed and completed form
    Read and sign the technical standards form provided.
  • Health History and Physical Examination - Submit a scanned copy of the signed and completed form.
    This examination will include immunization review of immunization or immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and technical standards review. Must be completed on the form provided.
  • Student Liability Insurance - (must be renewed annually, see student liability insurance section).
    Liability insurance is meant to protect the student during clinical rotations. It is not the same as health insurance. There are many places to get Athletic Training Student liability insurance including those listed on the form.
  • Athletic Training Student name badge - submit a scanned copy of the name badge
    Complete the form and submit with appropriate cost to the GCU bookstore as listed on the form, once you have received your name badge, scan a copy and submit. This process may take up to 2 weeks.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination - submit a scanned copy of the form provided
    You must provide proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or sign a waiver form declining vaccination.
  • Athletic Training Student Orientation- plan on attending the Friday prior courses starting in the fall.
    All students must attend Athletic Training Student Orientation including OSHA training.
