Achievements from our Students

GCU's Chapter of the Arizona Health Occupations Students of America (AZHOSA) recently competed and took home several awards at the National Leadership Conference this past June (2012) in Orlando, Florida,  Nearly 10,000 students from across the U.S. attended and competed in this year's conference.  The GCU Chapter of AZHOSA turned heads this year and brought home several awards across multiple disciplines.  Congratulations to Stephanie Doering, Joshua Ostrand and Dennis Winn for earning a gold medal and a $1,000 prize in the category of public health emergency preparedness.  GCU also took home a third-place medal in the emergency medical technician category, thanks to Casey Smith and Sydney Smith.  Congratulations to the entire AZHOSA Chapter for competing at such a high level and proudly representing GCU's College of Arts and Sciences!

Paul Barker (2011) is a recent graduate from GCU's pre-med program who was recently accepted to attend the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee beginning in the Fall 2012 semester.

 

Achievements from our Staff

Dr. Kirk Bowden will receive the Counselor Educator Advocacy Award for 2013 from the American Counseling Association (ACA) at the national conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. The American Counseling Association is the world's largest association representing professional counselors and has a membership of more than 50,000 professionals.

Additionally, Dr. Bowden has been appointed to a second term on the editorial board of the Substance Abuse Journal, the professional journal of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA).

Associate Professor Dr. Galyna Kufryk joined American and German experts in delivering a series of lectures during the prestigious 2011 European Science Foundation's conference on Microorganisms for Bio-fuel Production From Sunlight at Bielefeld University. Dr. Kufryk teaches general chemistry courses and genetics in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Kirk Bowden, Director of Professional Counseling and Addiction Studies for the College of Arts and Sciences, has been named President-elect of NAADAC (National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors).  The NAADAC represents the professional interests of more than 75,000 addiction counselors, educators and other addiction-focused health care professionals in the United States, Canada and abroad.

Dr. Randhir Deo, Assistant Professor at the College of Arts and Sciences, was published in Volume 23, Number 4 of the peer reviewed scientific journal, "Biodegradation".  Dr. Deo's paper is titled "A  Biogeochemical Framework for Bioremediation of Plutonium in the Subsurface Environment".

David Spilker is the administrative assistant for the College of Arts and Sciences and he recently graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Master's of Education in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
