Structured English Immersion Endorsement

Structured English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement  

Arizona Administrative Code R7-2-613. J.1 requires an SEI, ESL, or bilingual endorsement of all certified classroom teachers (elementary, secondary, career and technical education, and special education), supervisors, principals, and superintendents.

Provisional SEI Endorsement
All persons certified before August 31, 2006, holding a valid Arizona Elementary, Secondary, Principal, Superintendent, Supervisor, Career and Technical, and Special Education Certificate must complete the 15 clock hours or 1 semester hour of approved SEI Provisional training and have this endorsement added to their certificate to meet the requirements for the Provisional SEI Endorsement. (Mandated R7-2-613 J.2.c.)

All persons obtaining a valid Arizona Elementary, Secondary, Principal, Superintendent, Supervisor, Career and Technical, and Special Education Certificate on and after August 31, 2006, must complete 45 clock hours or 3 semester hours of approved SEI Provisional training and have this endorsement added to their certificate to meet the requirements for the Provisional SEI Endorsement. (Mandated R7-2-613 J.1.)

Full SEI Endorsement
Within three years of obtaining the Provisional SEI Endorsement, all persons holding a valid Arizona Elementary, Secondary, Principal, Superintendent, Supervisor, Career and Technical Education, and Special Education Certificate must complete an additional 45 clock hours or 3 semester hours of approved SEI training to apply for their Full SEI Endorsement. (Mandated R7-2-613 J.1.)

The College of Education offers the following courses for teacher or administrator candidates in order to obtain a full Arizona SEI Endorsement:

  • Provisional Structured English Immersion - ESL 223N or ESL 423*: SEI English Language Teaching: Foundations and Methodologies
  • Full Structured English Immersion - ESL 433*: Advanced Methodologies of Structured English Immersion

College of Education offers the following courses for practicing teachers and administrators in order to obtain a full Arizona SEI Endorsement:

  • Provisional Structured English Immersion - ESL 523*: SEI English Language Teaching: Foundations and Methodologies
  • Full Structured English Immersion - ESL 533*: Advanced Methodologies of Structured English Immersion

*In the "N" versions of the IR programs, each of these course numbers is followed by the letter N, i.e. ESL 423N, 433N, 523N, and 533N.
