How has facilitating online courses at GCU helped you find your purpose?
I have always had a passion for learning and sharing my education and experience with others. This coupled with the fact that my heart's desire has been to home school my children, has made online course facilitation a perfect match for me. I love interacting with my students online and being able to meaningfully contribute to my field during this time in my life where I am focusing on educating my children.

What is one effective teaching strategy you use in your online classes?
The most effective teaching strategy that I use in online courses is to interact, interact, interact. I think it is particularly important to try to identify my students on an individual level. I learn their nicknames and remember what they are going through so that I can connect with them in any manner that I can. I let them know that I am praying for them when they have difficulty. I make a concerted effort to discover ways I can ensure that the student knows they are not just a number.

What is a GCU online student success story you can share?
One of my students was struggling with writing and satisfactorily completing assignments. She was becoming disheartened with the program and thought about dropping out. She thought her dream of becoming a counselor was never going to come to fruition. She felt hopeless. The thing is that I did not know this was going on with her at first. I just kept reaching out to her, offering her coaching and guidance with writing, and encouragement. Week by week she began to make improvement and progress in her ability to communicate her understanding of the materials in written assignments and in discussions. By the end of the course, I received an email from the student explaining how she had felt at the beginning of the course (e.g. disheartened and hopeless). She stated, "This was the best learning that I experienced since entering Grand Canyon University. You helped me find my passion and drive towards a purpose. I have never participated as much in any other class. I really enjoy your teaching style and if I must say ‘I would like to be like you when I grow up'." This touched my heart deeply and reinforced to me that online teaching is the place where God has created me to be!
