How has facilitating online courses at GCU helped you find your purpose?
Education is the one thing no one can ever take away from you and teaching allows me to continue to learn while giving students some real world knowledge in the careers they are pursuing. The online platform enables many more people the opportunity to go back to school and many of these students have been out of school for a long time and are unsure of their ability to be successful. I see my job to not only teach within the prescribed curriculum, but to also reach out to each and every student to see what they need to be successful. I try to encourage them while giving them the necessary tools to be successful in my class, in their degree program and in life.
What is one effective teaching strategy you use in your online classes?
One thing I try to give the students is real life experiences and application of the theories they are learning. Since I am currently in private practice, I am able to give them examples of how what they are learning applies to real life. We are able to discuss the ever changing health care system and how it affects patients and providers. We talk about insurance and health care reform and it provides a real world view and keeps them interested in the subject matter.
What is a GCU online student success story you can share?
Since I have been with Grand Canyon University in various roles for over six years, I cannot tell you how many people I have seen develop from a scared prospective student to confident graduates. When this happens, it truly changes them and their family's life.
