Trent McDowell is a geologist with a lot of course work in microbiology, evolution and ecology. He received a bachelor of science from Millersville University in Pennsylvania and then earned a master of science from Vanderbilt after serving in the Army.
Mr. McDowell's experience led him to teach for Grand Canyon University and other universities; courses include environmental science, geology, and paleontology. He also co-authors a textbook on study aids for a book publisher, and in his spare time he runs long distance marathons and ultramarathons.
How has facilitating online courses at GCU helped you find your purpose?
What is one effective teaching strategy you use in your online classes?
I think often that students are afraid to admit that they don't know something. I like to remind my students that their questions help keep me employed and doing what I love - teaching. I hope this puts them at ease about asking questions.
What is a GCU online student success story you can share?I consider it a success when students reflect on their own lives and consider and learn about their impact on the environment. All the students that take environmental science seem to do just that! Many also spread the word about environmental science to their families and those around them
