How has facilitating online courses at GCU helped you find your purpose?

I believe teaching is one of my callings. Teaching at Grand Canyon University has helped me to complete my purpose guiding our students on their journey to meet their career and educational goals. Mentoring is a word that comes to mind in fulfilling my career as a teacher. It is very fulfilling to provide encouragement and see our students' grow and mature as they progress through their classes.

What is one effective teaching strategy you use in your online classes?
Having worked in management for over 30 years, I have developed a real grass-roots customer service attitude and apply that in serving our students. An effective strategy for me has been to be active and engaging in our class discussions. Providing insightful and practical comments in the class discussions is very helpful to the student learning experience. Incorporating current topics and issues in the discussions adds to the students' interest.

What is a GCU online student success story you can share?

I recently had a student who was a flood victim and experienced the loss of her vehicle. She had to move to another state. Through close communication via phone and email we were able to work together to meet these challenges. As a result she was able to successfully complete the course. It is amazing what people can accomplish in working together.
