Michael Tighe

Michael Tighe J. Michael Tighe Jr., MSN, RN graduated from Walden University in 2010, with a Master of Science in Nursing degree, with special focus on Informatics. As part of the goal setting process in graduate school, Mike expressed the desire to focus on helping students learn about Informatics, online. He worked as a nurse for over sixteen years, moving from the bedside to a corporate position as the Sr. Clinical Analyst/Meditech Administrator.
Mike received an Associate of Science in Nursing in 1999 from Southern Maine Community College, and a Licensed Practical Nursing certificate from Massachusetts Bay Community College in 1996. Prior to that Mike earned an Associate of Science degree focusing on Computer Science in 1994.

How has facilitating online courses at GCU helped you find your purpose?
I started teaching for Grand Canyon two years ago, hoping to share my experience and knowledge about Informatics. Teaching a mix of HIM-515, HIM-615, and HIM-650 allowed me to share knowledge with my students, preparing them for futures in Health Care technology.

What is one effective teaching strategy you use in your online classes?
I like to play devil's advocate to stimulate thinking and further research. I like to engage my students by asking open-ended questions.

What is a GCU online student success story you can share?
One of my students wrote the following thank you at the end of my last class.
Mike thank you for two interesting, challenging, and educational classes in which to advance my nursing career. I was so certain of what pathway to take prior to starting this program however, now I have numerous pathways to explore since taking your classes.
I thank you for your leadership in which I will use as I continue on. I enjoyed both classes.
