Barbara Davis Chao sports an illustrious performance career as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral flutist and teacher. Recently returning as Adjunct Instructor of Flute at Grand Canyon University, a position she held previously for nearly a decade, she also teaches at Phoenix College of the Maricopa Community Colleges and through her private studio. Current performing activities include playing Principal Flute with the West Valley Symphony and performing as extra with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra.

From 1992 through 2006, Barbara served as Artist-In-Residence at the Bay View Music Festival in Michigan, performing with Quintessence Chamber Ensemble, coaching chamber ensembles and teaching flute for the college-level Conservatory, and performing in trios and duos with her husband, cellist Frederick Chao. As Flutist with Quintessence since 1991, highlights include performances for the Sedona Chamber Music Festival, the Red Rocks Music Festival in Sedona, Chamber Music Corvallis in Oregon, the Crow Reservation in Montana, CD recordings Essence of Blue and Impressions of America, the premiere of Spiral VII by Chinary Ung, which received the coveted Koussevitzky Music Foundation Award, and the Quintessence 25th Anniversary Concert "Music from Bay View," held at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, in March of 2005.

Previously, Barbara was Principal Flutist with the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra for 12 years, Principal Flutist with Chamber Orchestra Oklahoma City and often appeared as guest soloist with both orchestras. She was also featured on the Oklahoma Artists Touring Roster with Go for Baroque and the Oklahoma Arts Quintet, the faculty wind quintet at Oklahoma City University where she served as Instructor of Flute. Prior to her position at Bay View, her summers included earned fellowships and positions at the Colorado Music Festival, the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood, the Blossom Music Festival and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. Barbara received the Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees in Performance from Northwestern University where she studied with Walfrid Kujala of the Chicago Symphony.
