Which type of file should I use?

An Adobe Illustrator (AI) file is vector formatted and can be combined with raster (bitmap) graphic files. AI files are your best choice for exchanging and/or printing high-resolution and layered graphics. Resizing (enlarging or compressing) vector files does not result in a loss of image quality.

PNG

A Portable Network Graphic (PNG) is a raster image file. It is particularly popular with web designers for its ability to handle graphics with transparent or semi-transparent backgrounds. Inherently, this makes them ideal for use online. PNGs do not contain layers, however their file format is ideal for graphics of a vector origin.
