What is Regalia?

Regalia consists of mortar boards (the cap), gowns and hoods depending on your level of degree completion. The distinguishing marks of the gowns indicate the level of scholastic achievement of the wearer. Those who hold doctorates wear gowns that have a facing of velvet on the bell-shaped sleeves as well as front panels.  While neither the master's nor bachelor's gowns have trimmings, both are distinguished by the cut of the sleeves. The master's gown is noted by its long oblong sleeve which drapes freely to the wrist; the bachelor's gown has a pointed sleeve.

Hoods, designed to display the school's colors, as well as the type of degree and area of study, are worn around the neck and flowing down the back. The color of the lining inside the hood- the chevron- represents the colors of the wearer's alma mater. The color and width of the velvet edging on the hood indicates the degree and field of study.

Baccalaureate graduates of Grand Canyon University wear the black gown with GCU purple stole without the hood. The academic colleges are represented by the color of the tassels which hang from the mortarboards.
