Become a Mentor

Prospective Students

Becoming a Mentor

The GCU Mentor Program, which is part of the Office of Campus Life, helps first-year students become acclimated to college living.  This program creates the feel of a more intimate college setting for new students and fosters relationships between students, faculty and staff.

Mission

The mission of the GCU Mentor Program is to provide an opportunity for new students to connect with mentors who are knowledgeable about Grand Canyon University. Each mentee is grouped with a peer or faculty/staff mentor according to shared academic and extra-curricular interests. Throughout the school year, mentorship groups participate in a variety of activities, both academic and social, that work toward supporting and encouraging each first-year student.

How to Become a Peer Mentor

  • Peer mentors are undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) who volunteer to offer advice, respond to questions, and provide information about campus and community resources to incoming freshmen (mentees). Peer mentors represent all academic departments across Grand Canyon University.
  • Those interested in becoming a peer mentor must apply through our online system. Mentors and mentees are matched based on the information provided in their application.
  • After submitting their application online, applicants are interviewed by our staff. Then, those individuals chosen as mentors are paired with mentees.
  • A typical peer mentor will spend 2-3 hours a month with their mentee on activities related to the Mentor Program.
  • Peer mentors are encouraged to partner with their mentee to plan get-togethers, study breaks and other activities at least once per month throughout the year.

Peer Mentor Benefits

Serving as a peer mentor is a valuable form of service that directly impacts the University community. By volunteering your time, energy and knowledge about college life, you contribute enormously to the success of the entering class by helping them become acclimated and integrated into the University community!

A relationship with mentees allows peer mentors to:

  • Share experiences and help others avoid similar obstacles
  • Develop/improve upon organizational and leadership skills
  • Enhance their undergraduate experience and expand their network
