Step 2 Determining What to Include

Determining what to include in your resume can vary from job to job, so having your skills file accessible and up to date is key. To find relevant information on a particular job, ask yourself the following:

  • How is my education important? (Include degrees earned and possibly specific courses taken.)
  • What skills have I acquired?
  • What do I do best?
  • Do I have any exceptional talents and experiences that I am able to share?
  • Can I name any satisfying work experiences that I have had?
  • Am I able to name the skills and experiences need, when reviewing a specific job description?
  • Am I using the language of my chosen field or industry?

Whether you're writing your first resume or updating it for the 20th time, it may seem like a daunting task but by taking the time to thoughtfully answer these questions you can make the task of creating your resume easier. Use the materials organized in your skills file to answer these questions. Expected that there may be some similarities in your answers, this is okay.
