Welcome Week 2012

Education and work experience sections are almost always included in a resume. To provide an overview of your abilities, frequently a profile section or summary of qualifications is used. Some people start with the objective when writing their resume in order to give the reader a point of reference to understand strengths and experience. Other sections included in resumes are those that highlight publications or presentations, and community or professional involvement. As state previously, "one size" does not fit all so tailor your resume in a way that brings out your strengths!

Common Resume Sections

  • Contact Information
  • Profile or Summary of Qualifications
  • Education
  • Skills (if either functional or combination formats are used)
  • Work Experience (two basic layouts, if you are using the chronological or the functional formatting)

Additional Sections (Optional)

These sections are optional and should only be listed if they are relevant to the position.

Objectives

  • Technical Skills/Programming*
  • Community Involvement
  • Professional involvement
  • Awards
  • Publications/Presentations*
  • Licenses and/or Certifications
  • Skills
  • Class Projects
  • Professional Affiliations (related to your field or organization)
  • Languages

*You may create pages that supplement these sections if they are broad.

Resume Length

Usually resumes are one or two pages in length. Don't concern yourself about the resume length at the beginning stages of writing your resume. Start by choosing the sections that will showcase your strengths and write everything down.  Later, review your resume, edit any unnecessary information, and ask others to assess it.
