Credit Equivalency Calculator

Credit Equivalency Calculator

When coursework is equivalent, transfer credit from a quarter system institution is evaluated and converted to semester hours on a 1:0.66 ratio (See equivalency table below). Courses that are evaluated and converted to a fractional amount of credit (e.g., 2.66) will be rounded up or down accordingly in content to satisfy the content requirement of a given GCU course.

Quarter Hours Equivalent
Semester Hours
5 3.33
4 2.66
3 2.00
2 1.33
1 0.66

Here are some examples to illustrate the equivalency concept:

Example A:
If a student completed 4 quarter hours of EDU313N, the hours would be converted to 2.66 semester hours of EDU313N at GCU. For purposes of fulfilling the course content requirement, this would be rounded up to 3 credit hours and the student would then fulfill GCU's 3 semester hour EDU313N content requirement. However, the student would earn only 2.66 semester hours toward the overall requirement of 120 to earn an undergraduate degree. The student must meet the 120 credit hour program requirement for graduation.

Example B:
If a student completed 3 quarter credit hours of ENG 101, the hours would be converted to 2.00 semester hours of ENG 105 at GCU. The 2 credit hours would count toward the overall requirement of 120 credits, but would not fulfill the 3 credits of Composition/Grammar requirement. The student would have to take at least one more credit of English grammar or composition to achieve the requirement in the Effective Communication general education category.
