Dr. Brian C. Smith directs the Colangelo School of Sports Business at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. He earned his Ph.D. in 2007 from the University of New Mexico, specializing in sports administration and sports psychology. Prior to his arrival at GCU, Dr. Smith served as the sports management program coordinator at East Tennessee State University. He taught at both the graduate and undergraduate level while also supervising all student internships. His research interests primarily relate to social issues in sport, especially as they pertain to the academic performance of NCAA Division I African American male basketball players.
Smith also spent significant time at the University of New Mexico working first as a Graduate Assistant Basketball Coach and later as a Student Success Manager within the UNM Lobos Athletic Department. His sports psychology consultation seminars have assisted numerous elite athletes and teams from around the country, including several current and former NBA players.
Smith played NCAA Division I college basketball for the UNM Lobos. He was selected as a team captain and was also once featured by the Albuquerque Journal newspaper as one of the toughest athletes to have ever played a sport within the state of New Mexico. During his high school basketball career at Tucson Salpointe, Smith was named 1st Team All-Arizona and the Southern Arizona Player-of-the-Year.
