Biography

Paul Koch (pronounced "Cook") is Instrumental Professor of Music and Director of the Thundering Heard Pep Band at Grand Canyon University, where he also conducts the Wind Ensemble, Thunder Big Band, Percussion Studio and music education classes.
Prior to Paul's appointment at GCU, he was Director of Bands at Perry High School in Chandler, Arizona, where he opened the school in 2007. During the first five years of existence, while under Paul's direction, the Perry High School band won a WGAZ Percussion and WGAZ Guard Championship, the Puma Regiment earned top five placement in the Arizona State Championships two years in a row, the Puma Jazz Band took a successful tour of New York City and established the Puma Band Fans parent organization, which provides opportunities for all performers.

In addition to directing the Perry High School Instrumental Band Program, Paul was the Band Chair for the Southwest Region Honor Band Festival. Paul also continues to arrange competitive battery and front ensemble percussion shows and adjudicates at many A.B.O.D.A. marching festivals and WGAZ Percussion competitions.

Paul was also the creative director of the Phoenix Sun's PHX Percussion from 2005 - 2010 where he composed, choreographed and worked with Phoenix Suns Game Night Operations staff to help entertain thousands of Phoenix Suns fans as well as off-court Phoenix Suns Charities.

Paul received his Bachelor of Music in 2000 from the University of North Texas, while studying with Dr. Robert Schietroma, Paul Rennick, Leigh Howard Stevens, She-e Wu and many others. Paul was on scholarship with the award winning UNT drum line-- the 13-time P.A.S.I.C. indoor drum line champions. While at UNT, Paul also performed with numerous percussion ensembles and was the Timpanist for Dr. Brian Bowman's UNT Brass Band.

Paul then traveled to Arizona State University and received his Masters of Music in Percussion Performance in 2002, under the direction of Dr. J.B. Smith. As a Graduate Assistant in the Percussion Department, Paul taught the Percussion Methods class as well as undergraduate private lessons.

Paul is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Music Educators National Conference, Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association, Percussive Arts Society, The American Bandmasters Association and the College Band Directors National Association.
