GCU scored the first two points of the match and led by as much as 19-5 in the first set. Senior outside hitter Dana Edington (Centennial High School) broke a second-set 6-6 tie with a kill. It started a 4-0 run. Sophomore Laurann Durbin scored the last two points on service aces. Though Mesa State got within one, 23-22, GCU never trailed after the Edington spike. In the third set, GCU trailed 22-21, but key blocks and kills gave GCU a 24-22 advantage. Hiller had a .308 attack percentage and four block assists. Skadeland hit .267 with six kills. Durbin and Edington each had 11 digs.
Grand Canyon won twice Saturday to finish 5-0.
The Lopes 5-0 start to the season ties the top mark under 15-year head coach Kris Naber. Against Western State, GCU was led by senior Edington with 14 kills and a .414 attack percentage. The Lopes won the match 25-16, 25-23, 26-24. Edington added a pair of service aces and five total blocks.
GCU finished its weekend in Colorado off with a 18-25, 30-28, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12 win over Adams State.
