Mesa Red Mountain's Paul Newendyke has given a verbal commitment to play basketball at Grand Canyon University, Red Mountain boys basketball coach Greg Sessions said Thursday.
Newendyke, a 6-foot-2 guard, is preparing for his fourth varsity season at Red Mountain later this fall. The senior averaged 12 points a game, 7.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists last season helping the Mountain Lions to a 21-11 season and a state playoff berth.
"He's done a lot of the right things the last few years and loves the game," Sessions said. "It's good news for us because this doesn't happen a lot here. We're excited for him."
Newendyke has not missed a game in three varsity seasons and is averaging nearly 10 points a game for his career.
"He has a shot at several school records this year," Sessions said. "The fact he hasn't missed a game is amazing."
