Finding Tatum’s Purpose: Basketball and the Havocs

By Tatum Sorrelman

GCU student section during a basketball game

GCU basketball games are always crazy. Our massive student section at GCU is called the Havocs, and they create an unbelievable energy at every game! It makes the games even more fun and exciting. The Havocs keep everyone hyped through thick and thin.

So, how can you spot the Havocs? At the beginning of every basketball game, everyone is encouraged to stand until the Lopes score. Once the Lopes score, everyone can sit down… except for the Havocs. They stay standing the entire game to keep the energy high no matter the score of the game.

The Havocs are the loudest student section… EVER. They cheer, yell and dance constantly and it makes going to the games a blast.

The student race is one of my favorite things that happens during the game. There are two giant sections in the arena devoted to students, and at the bottom of each section, a student waits for the race to start. Once the announcer gives the OK, the two students waiting at the bottom of each section is lifted into the air to crowd surf. The first student to reach the top of the section while crowd surfing wins the race. It’s so much fun to be a part of!

There is something amazing about being a part of a group of students who are all united for one purpose. It puts a smile on my face every time I am able to attend a game. If you haven’t attended a GCU basketball game and seen the Havocs in action, you should see for yourself what the loudest student section in college basketball looks like. You won’t be disappointed.

There’s so much to see and do at GCU, including going to the basketball games. Keep following my GCU experience on YouTube and the GCU Blogs Network.
