William Symington earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative and Performing Arts from Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre from Arizona State University. His professional and academic career spans more than three decades in theatre, entertainment production, and higher education. Professor Symington has served as a scenic designer, production manager, technical director, artistic director, educator, and academic administrator throughout his career. Prior to joining Grand Canyon University, he held numerous positions within Arizona State University's School of Theatre and Film and Lyric Opera Theatre, including Technical Director, Scenic Designer, Production Manager, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Outreach Coordinator, and Instructor. He has also worked professionally with a wide variety of theatre companies, educational institutions, and corporate clients throughout Arizona and the Southwest. Since helping launch Grand Canyon University's College of Fine Arts and Production in 2010, Professor Symington has played a key role in developing theatre and entertainment production programs, creating curriculum, designing performance and production facilities, leading academic assessment initiatives, and mentoring students preparing for careers in the performing arts and entertainment industries. He has served as Assistant Dean, Theatre Department Chair, Professor of Theatre, Head of Production, Scenic Designer, and Artistic Director, overseeing more than 200 productions and special events. Professor Symington's areas of expertise include scenic design, production management, technical direction, arts administration, entertainment production, and curriculum development. His passion is preparing students for success in the evolving worlds of theatre, film, television, live events, themed entertainment, and emerging media while fostering creativity, collaboration, and professional excellence.
