Everyone knows that words are powerful. They can lift people up, tear people down and everything in between. Have you felt regret for words you have said to others? Wished you had said something when you stayed quiet? The Bible calls us to be purposeful with our words, as they carry great power. Key principles from the Bible regarding how our words should be used are that they should be used with kind intent, with thought and should reflect Christ.

Scripture On Our Words

We have all been taught to be kind to others, but this goes deeper than simply “being nice.” The way Christians talk should be encouraging to those around them, gentle, loving and truthful. Being intentional with your thoughts before speaking is the best way to evaluate whether or not your words are going to be a reflection of these traits.

"The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
— Proverbs 18:21

This scripture tells us that our tongue has the power of life and death. This means that God created humans with powerful speech on purpose, so that we can support and bless others. “Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” — Proverbs 15:4 NLT.

When humans became sinful, our words became sinful too and became used to gossip, slander and tear others down. "Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving." — Ephesians 5:4 ESV.

The Power of Our Speech

The Bible tells us that we will each give an account for every careless word we have spoken (Matthew 12:36). Imagine every word you said about someone behind their back was suddenly said to their face. How many friendships would you lose? God, however, knows every word we have spoken and every thought we have had. And yet, in His gracious and forgiving nature, He still loves us.

How often do you refer to a hurtful event as a “knife to the heart”? Scripture gives a clear understanding that reckless words are like a sword (Proverbs 12:18). God understands how impactful our words are to others and instructs us to use them with wisdom and purpose.

Think Before You Speak

Humans talk a lot. Typically, when deep in conversation, we get carried away without realizing. Notice how when someone is ranting to you, they seem to never stop talking. In our fast-paced world, we quickly get into the habit of saying as much as we can, as quickly as possible. Scripture tells us to be “slow to speak” (James 1:9). Imagine a world where everyone used their words intentionally in a manner that would reflect Jesus.

Are you finding yourself remorseful for words you have said, and aren’t sure where to begin with developing the skill of wise words?

Here are some places to start:

  • Spend more time in the Word and your desire for foul speech will fade.
  • Surround yourself with godly friends who use appropriate language and don’t gossip or slander.
  • Pray that God will help you think before you speak.
  • Be purposeful in slowing down your everyday living. Being in a rush often puts intentionality aside.

The Lord will hold us accountable for the things that we have said. If you are worried about what this will reflect, take a moment to consider the impact on your life if you approach every conversation with a reflection of Jesus.

Our language reflects our hearts, so let your words be an account of your Christian testimony.
