Grand Canyon University (GCU) welcomes all students, faculty and staff with disabilities. Student Disability Services ensures all students have equal access to systems, programs and facilities. Our adherence to state, federal and local laws, exemplifies our determination to be inclusive of all members of the GCU community.
Student Disability Services is the designated department for accommodation requests, as guided by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act and GCU policy. Members of our team evaluate disability documentation, determine eligibility and implement reasonable accommodations for enrolled students. If GCU is unable to meet your request(s), our office oversees GCU's formal grievance process and works with you to implement feasible solutions.

Steps to Accommodation
Requests should be submitted at least two weeks (10 working days) prior to the start of term to allow adequate processing time. To request accommodations through GCU:
- To complete the accommodation request, use your Student Portal login information. Access the Student Portal at sds.gcu.edu
- Gather supporting documentation. Your disability must be acknowledged by a medical provider (i.e. doctor, psychiatrist, etc.) or testing service (i.e. the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) on company letterhead.
- Submit copies of all items to Student Disability Services.
- Processing begins when all items are received by Student Disability Services.
Accommodations are not retroactive. Approved requests received after the course start date will be effective as of the date appropriate documentation and the completed request form were received by Student Disability Services.
Documentation for permanent disabilities remains on file with Student Disability Services. Your documentation remains confidential and is kept on file in Student Disability Services for verification purposes.
Notify Student Disability Services of any schedule changes that may occur during your program of study to ensure accommodations are in place. If you withdraw or are suspended from GCU, you must contact Student Disability Services upon return to re-establish accommodations. To continue receiving accommodations, you are required to complete a new Accommodation Request Form annually based on the original approval date.
GCU can grant temporary accommodations for unexpected or inevitable medical issues, such as major surgery or hospitalization. If approved, accommodations will be in place for the remainder of the current term; additional documentation will be requested to extend services.
Please note: GCU cannot provide accommodations that are not properly requested.
Housing Accomodations Policy
To request special housing accommodations due to a major medical issue, first complete GCU's housing application. Then, follow the process outlined above in the in Steps to Accommodation section.
You are limited to one preferential roommate as part of accommodations and should include that student's information on your Accommodation Request Form. Housing accommodation requests are determined on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to availability.
You have specific, accessible room options available in GCU housing. If you are approved for housing accommodations, Student Disability Services will notify the you of your approved placement. Verification of placement will come from Housing Operations via email.
If requests for housing accommodations are not approved, you will receive an official denial notice via email. You may reply to this notice to appeal the decision. The appeal shall be reviewed and further decisions will be based on input from Student Affairs and housing availability.
