Tatum Sorrelman
Student Writer, Grand Canyon University
Tatum Sorrelman is the oldest child in a family of five, and she enjoys every minute of it. Being the oldest has given her a lot of responsibilities and has helped form her personality. Her family is very important to her, and she enjoys spending time with them. Her culture is important to her as well; she is Navajo and she tries to learn as much about her heritage as she can. Tatum loves music; it has always been a big part of her life. She can play the flute, the tuba and a little bit of the guitar, too. She also really enjoys going to concerts and listening to music live with her friends and family. In addition, she also likes to sing and act. She has performed in numerous productions like “Footloose” and “Peter Pan,” and she has always enjoyed the excitement that it gives her to be a part of something that so many people have worked hard for.

Being active has been a big part of her life, too. She has participated in numerous sports such as gymnastics and softball. But she really found joy in playing soccer. She played soccer for eight years, six in elementary school and middle school and two in high school. She had so much fun in soccer that although she couldn’t play her junior year, due to a knee injury, she was the team manager and helped out as much as she could. Reading is also something that she finds fun to do. It can allow your mind to wander to places that it has never been before and that is something that she has always found cool. Tatum is also an animal person. She thinks it’s amazing that animals have the ability to make you feel a bond that most times doesn’t even exist between people. She can be very shy, but she has learned to be more outgoing and try new things. That is her in a nutshell.

I am an incoming freshman to GCU. GCU made me feel at peace in a way that no other school had. I felt drawn to it. GCU fit my personality and my nature. In my heart I felt that GCU was where I needed to be so I applied soon after I toured the school and I received my acceptance letter soon after. For me personally, there was no other school that would fit me the way GCU would.

I am very excited to be able to be living on campus. I can’t wait to be living in the atmosphere that surrounds GCU. The Christian aspect of GCU is one of the reasons why I chose to go here.

My Christian faith is something that takes a major priority in my life. I’ve been blessed to grow up in a Christian household and to have a family that surrounds me with their love of God each and every day. I am by no means perfect and I don’t always act the way that I should, but I try to live my life as Christ would want me to and the gospel is what helps me do that. The way I am and the way that I live my life is all because of the gospel. The gospel teaches us to follow Jesus and live a life that is worthy of Him. My parents raised me to do this and it has made me the person that I am today.

During my senior year of high school I was very stressed out. I was worried about the next chapter in my life and what it would bring. My stress kept me scared of the future and in turn it caused me to not enjoy all of the things that I could have. My advice to high schoolers who are preparing for college would be to stop worrying and leave everything to God. I wasted so much time and energy being afraid of how I would do in something that hadn’t even happened yet. My advice would be to breathe and let God work it out.
