This is an exciting time for you high school seniors. Soon, you will be walking across the stage to receive your high school diploma and, not long after, packing your bags to head off to your first semester of college. Between those events, though, are the months of summer. This time can be an opportunity for high school seniors to work a summer job. College is an exciting place with endless opportunities. Having extra cash on hand can be a great advantage. There may be times when you want to try out a new local restaurant or purchase some college swag. You may even wish to participate in a mission trip. By having money saved up from that summer job, you will be one step ahead in expanding your college experience.

Building a Resume

A summer job can also help build up your resume for the future. Having a summer job will not only increase your experience in working with different types of people, but will also teach you important traits that will enhance your resume. Some of these traits include time management, ability to work with a team and a good work ethic. Whether you work at a summer camp as a camp counselor, at a restaurant as a server or even spend afternoons mowing or weeding neighbors’ yards, you are earning experience that employers look for in potential employees.

Job Hunting and Interview Tips

There are many places to find a summer job. You can find job openings in your neighborhood over the Internet and in the paper, or you can go to the businesses themselves and ask for applications. Also, network with family, friends and even acquaintances. You never know who will be willing to point you in the direction of a job or even offer you one.

When you are asked to interview, it is important to be professional. Be sure to wear professional attire, no matter what job you are being interviewed for. Ladies, wear a modest shirt and tailored pants or a knee-length skirt. Gentlemen, wear a collared shirt tucked into dress pants or khakis. Bring a list of references and be prepared to answer questions, such as “Why are you interested in this job?” or “Why do you think you are qualified for this position?”

A summer job can be a valuable and character-building experience. Take advantage of your free time during the summer, and earn experience that will help jump start your future career.
