Passion. It is a quality that all humans possess.
As students attending Grand Canyon University, we all are reminded every day to have purpose in our actions. Specifically, with the Honors College, there is an extra emphasis on the importance of preparing yourself for success.
When going through the motions of college, it can be confusing and difficult to know what you are truly supposed to be doing in your career walk.
For sophomore Brianna Allen, choosing the right major was not an overnight decision. She developed a big heart for helping others at a young age because of her parents’ mission work.
Allen started out pursuing a career path in the medical field because she saw it as the most practical way to enter the mission field.
However, plans changed for Allen this past summer when she attended a leadership conference that focused on people pursuing their true passions and God’s purpose for their lives. It was at that conference that she realized her true passion was to help people through nonprofit organizations.
“It was my AHA moment,” Allen said.
Allen decided going into her sophomore year to change her focus to a major in sociology and minor in business administration and Christian studies.
“The reason I switched [from pre-med] is because I knew I would be in school for many years trying to get my degree and I would be financially tied down by debt – I could not just pick up my life and go where God told me.”
Allen does not know what exactly she will be doing in nonprofit yet, but she is confident in pursuing her passion for helping others.
“I feel a lot less stressed, just because I know I am where I am supposed to be. It is a little bit scary not knowing if I will have a job after college, but I know after all that I will be happier.”
Allen’s advice to those who are not sure about their major is to “do what you are passionate about. As long as you feel like that is what God is calling you to do, you should follow that. Do not worry about if you do not know what your major is now – that will come in time. If you do feel like you are in the wrong major now, switch to what you care about.”
God has given us all a specific purpose in life. One of the ways He shows His love is through giving us passions and interests. He loves when we fully go after what He has for us.
We at the Grand Canyon University Honors College, encourage you all to pursue your passion because it truly is there for a reason; use your actions, interests and passions to glorify God in all you do.
Allen goes on to say, “As long as I am doing what God has called me to do, God will provide.”
