Trending Faith: Should I Read Scripture on My Own?

A group of students reading together

This week’s question for Trending Faith was about personal reading of a Sunday sermon: “Would you recommend reading Scripture on my own to compare it to what is being preached on Sunday?”

Grand Canyon University Campus Pastor and Dean of Students Tim Griffin and Dean of the College of Theology Jason Hiles, PhD, discussed the benefits of personal readings of Scripture.

“Oh, absolutely. There’s no question,” exclaimed Dr. Hiles, immediately answering the question.

We’re responsible for knowing what Scripture says, even looking at Jesus and how He quoted Scripture when he was confronted with issues that were perceived with His teachings.

Searching through Scripture gives us the opportunity to see where “the rubber meets the road” and how Jesus’ teachings can apply to our faith and our everyday life.

As Dr. Hiles pointed out, this topic is also directly related to biblical literacy and how often we are taking in the Word of God.
