We have heard the Sunday school retelling of the resurrection of Jesus, and we often celebrate Easter with our friends and families. However, a lot of us forget the importance of the cross; it is not just a piece of wood that Jesus was killed on, it is a symbol of redemption and connection to Christ.

Why Is It a Symbol of Connection?

Jesus died for all of our sins so that we can have a relationship with Christ. He is our connection to the Lord. His death on the cross is the ultimate sacrifice, and a symbol for everyone, even non-believers, that we have a path to God.

When thinking of the cross, a lot of us do not realize the severity of humiliation it was at the time. It was a public execution, meant to be embarrassing and cause a long, painful death. One question that a lot of people may ask is: If Jesus was so powerful, why did He not evade His death?

The point of why He willingly died on the cross for us is to show that he took on human weakness. This being so he could lay down a perfect life as an example of how we should live. He humbled Himself, becoming obedient as we should be.

His dying on the cross and being born human allows us to have a stronger connection with God. He isn’t just our God, but He wants to know us and for us to come to Him.

"In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus."
— Philippians 2:5, NIV

How To Follow His Example

Being Christlike can be hard, while we still can fall into sin, that doesn’t mean we still cannot be saved by Christ and go to Heaven. We are called to be obedient like Jesus, so every day we should learn and grow from our past mistakes.

How Can We Be More Christlike?

  • Read the Bible. His word allows us to get to know Him better and allows us to grow deeper in our faith.
  • Follow His commandments given; it is not just about reading them. We can all have goals, but what really matters is implementing a routine of growth.
  • Have discipline. Recognize your struggles and build a community that will keep you responsible.

As we strive to become more like Jesus, we are also called to humility. This means being willing to let go of pride, acknowledge our need for forgiveness and extend grace to others. If we become more obedient and disciplined like Jesus, we can find peace and comfort in the Lord.

"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet."
— John 13:14, NIV

Jesus shows us that being Christlike begins with humility and service. He takes on the role of a servant, demonstrating that true leadership is rooted in love and selflessness. Following His commandments means applying His teachings in our daily lives, even when it challenges our comfortable routines.

As you reflect on the cross, let it remind you of Christ’s grace and selfless sacrifice — a powerful symbol of restored relationship and closeness with the Lord.
