  1. Leadership - Candidates will develop their understanding of leadership as service as they seek to positively influence others in the educational community. Candidates will identify student and organizational needs, develop goals that meet those needs, create and implement plans for achieving those goals, and determine measurement systems to assess the results of plan implementation.
    • Lead with kindness, compassion, and justice for the good of followers and the community. [MC3]
    • Contribute to the restoration of communities and society at large, demonstrating leadership as service. [MC3]
    • Use collaboration techniques to provide positive, effective, leadership and guidance to others. [MC4]
    • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve identified goals aligned with mission and vision of student affairs. [MC4]
    • Evaluate outcomes of strategic plans to determine effectiveness in furthering the mission and vision of the institute of higher education. [MC2]
    • Develop and support open, productive, caring and trusting relationships among leaders, faculty, staff and students that foster team building. [MC4]
  2. Resource Management - Candidates develop organizational structures and processes within student affairs in order to effectively and efficiently manage resources in furthering the mission and vision of student affairs in the higher education environment.
    • Strategically prioritize and allocate resources based on assessed needs of students in the higher education setting. [MC3]
    • Evaluate outcomes of resource allocation in light of the greater mission of student affairs. [MC2]
    • Determine human capital needs and evaluate skills required to accomplish departmental goals. [MC4]
    • Establish organizational structures required to reach departmental goals and fulfill the mission of student affairs. [MC4]
  3. Student Development - Candidates use their understanding of the characteristics and needs of students in higher education to engage in reciprocal relationships with students, families, colleagues, and the community to promote healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging higher education community.
    • Develop programming to engage students in building and maintaining university community. [MC5]
    • Promote individual self-efficacy in diverse higher education students to increase student engagement and improve community. [MC5]
    • Analyze student’s strengths to empower them to effectively lead in establishing community and fostering engagement among the student body [MC3, MC4]
    • Coach students in order to promote them in their given role and prepare them for post-academic environments. [MC4]
  4. Law and Ethics - Candidates conduct the business of the student affair with an understanding of the ethics and applicable laws related to higher education student affairs. These laws and ethics inform all decisions, including in crisis management, and required and responsible reporting.
    • Conduct business transactions in compliance with all applicable higher education laws, regulations, and the policies and procedures of the organization. [MC3]
    • Develop an ethical perspective to apply university and college policies and relevant laws to the practice of student affairs. [MC3]
    • Develop organizational practices for addressing student affairs crises in order to prepare for and intervene in the least obtrusive manner. [MC4]
    • Analyze the ethical implications of decisions and promote ethical standards within organizations. [MC2, MC3]
    • Analyze legal and ethical implications of required and responsible reporting. [MC3]
  5. Professionalism - Candidates engage in ongoing professional learning and use evidence to continually evaluate and improve their practice, as well as seek appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to collaborate with students, families, colleagues, other school professionals and community members to ensure student growth, and to advance the profession.
    • Apply theoretical and evidence-based research related to student affairs in the higher education setting.[MC2]
    • Reflect on practice in light of research on student affairs and professional ethics in order to improve professional practice.[MC2, MC3]
    • Practice methods of self-reflection that contribute to the development of character required by effective leaders.
    • Evaluate the effects of professional decisions and actions on students, families, and other professionals in the learning community. [MC2]
    • Actively seek opportunities to grow professionally and align practices with laws related to educational equity. [MC3]
    • Establish and maintain positive collaborative relationships with students and families to promote the intellectual, social, and emotional growth and well-being of students. [MC4]
