  • Leadership -
    Candidates build the character and skills essential for ethical leadership in student affairs: practice self-reflection, lead with integrity and humility, model collaboration, and foster trusting relationships. Additionally, candidates will assess the impact of their leadership on team culture and productivity.
    • Practice methods of self-reflection that contribute to the development of character required by effective leaders. (MC3]
    • Represent a personal strategy for leading with integrity, humility, and justice for the good of the team and the community. [MC3]
    • Model collaboration techniques. [MC4, MC5]
    • Create a strategy to foster open, productive, caring, and trusting relationships. [MC3, MC4]
    • Evaluate the effects of leadership decisions on team culture and productivity.
  • Resource Management -
    Candidates develop organizational structures and processes within higher education student affairs to effectively and efficiently manage resources that align with an institution's mission and vision.
    • Allocate resources according to prioritized assessed needs of students in the higher education setting. [MC3]
    • Determine the human capital needs required to accomplish departmental goals. [MC4]
    • Analyze the impact of resource management decisions on relevant parties. [MC2]
  • Student Development -
    Candidates use their understanding of the characteristics and needs of students in higher education to engage in mutually beneficial relationships with students, families, colleagues, and the community to promote a healthy, respectful, and supportive higher education community.
    • Develop co-curricular programming to increase student engagement and enhance the physical and virtual community. [MC5]
    • Analyze students' strengths to empower them to lead their community of peers. [MC3, MC4]
    • Apply student development theory to prepare students for post-academic environments. [MC4]
  • Law and Ethics -
    Candidates conduct the business of student affairs with an understanding of the ethics and applicable laws related to higher education student affairs. These laws and ethics inform all decisions, including in crisis management, and required and responsible reporting.
    • Conduct business transactions in compliance with all applicable higher education laws, regulations, and the policies and procedures of the organization. [MC1, MC3]
    • Develop an ethical perspective that applies institutional policies and relevant laws to the practice of student affairs. [MC1, MC3]
    • Develop student affairs practices for addressing student crises. [MC2, MC4]
    • Analyze the legal and ethical implications of student affairs procedures. [MC2, MC3]
    • Respond to topics in higher education student affairs within the context of the mission, vision, and values of the institution.
  • Professionalism -
    Candidates engage in ongoing professional learning and use evidence to continually evaluate and improve their practice, as well as seek appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to collaborate with students, families, colleagues, other school professionals and community members to ensure student growth, and to advance the profession.
    • Seek professional growth opportunities related to student affairs roles, laws, and educational equity. [MC3]
    • Develop strategies to establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with students and families to promote the intellectual, social, and emotional growth and well-being of students. [MC3, MC4]
    • Collaborate with colleagues, higher education professionals, external agencies or the larger community to establish and maintain an effective educational environment. [MC4]
    • Reflect on research-informed ethical professional practices in higher education student affairs to identify areas of personal and professional improvement. [MC2, MC3]
  • Strategic Planning -
    Candidates develop skills to create, implement, and evaluate organizational structures and strategic plans that support the mission of student affairs. Students will apply theoretical and evidence-based research to set departmental goals, align initiatives with institutional priorities, and address student affairs needs.
    • Establish organizational structures required to reach departmental goals and fulfill the mission of student affairs. [MC4]
    • Apply data and research to topics in higher education student affairs. [MC2]
    • Develop a Student Affairs strategic plan. [MC4]
    • Evaluate a student affairs strategic plan related to the institution's mission, vision, and values [MC3].
