Trusting God can be one of the most challenging aspects of faith. It is often easy to say that we trust Him, but living with that confidence, especially during difficult or uncertain seasons, is another matter. Building a strong relationship with God takes time and intentionality. It involves more than attending church; it requires inviting Him into your everyday life through prayer, reflection and faithful action.

As your faith grows, you may find yourself asking important questions, such as What does it truly mean to trust God? Learning how to trust in God begins with understanding these questions, helping you develop a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Him.

What It Means To Trust God

Trusting God is more than simply believing that He exists; it is choosing to place your confidence in His character, wisdom and plans, even when you cannot see the full picture. It means believing that He is working in your life and that His timing and guidance are ultimately for your good.

Trust does not require the absence of doubt or fear. Rather, it means continuing to follow God despite uncertainty. It is choosing faith over fear, seeking His direction through prayer and Scripture and striving to live in a way that reflects Christ's love and example. As you continue to rely on Him, trust becomes less of a single decision and more of a daily practice that strengthens your faith over time.

Why Trusting God Can Feel Difficult

Learning how to trust God in difficult times does not always come naturally. As humans, we all wrestle with uncertainty, questions and seasons of doubt. While faith calls us to trust in God, growing in that trust is often a lifelong journey. These challenges can actually deepen our relationship with Him, teaching us to rely on His guidance and grace in new ways.

"Personally, it can be hard to see things that are not already there. I have expectations on how I think my life should look, yet I still struggle to build the life I want to live. I have to put the effort in every day to see progress."
— Kayleigh Shaw

For many people, social pressures, personal struggles or feelings of isolation can make it difficult to fully place their faith in God. Every believer's journey looks different. Some Christians express their faith with great passion and confidence, while others connect with God in quieter ways. Beginning or strengthening your walk with Christ can feel especially lonely if friends or family do not share your beliefs.

It is important to remember that no two faith journeys are the same. We all come from different backgrounds, experiences and circumstances. Wherever you are in your relationship with God, He meets you there. Trust is not built overnight — it grows through prayer, perseverance and experiencing His faithfulness over time.

Bible Verses About Growing in Faith

There are so many examples in the Bible of people facing challenges and choosing to put their faith in God. For example:

  • Abraham Trusts God’s Promise: God asked Abraham to leave his homeland and go to an unknown place. Later, God tested Abraham's faith by asking him to sacrifice Isaac, the son through whom God's promises were to be fulfilled. Although Abraham did not understand everything, he chose to trust God's plan. — Genesis 12:1-4
  • Moses Leads Israel Through the Red Sea: When the Israelites found themselves trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army, the situation seemed impossible. God instructed Moses to move forward and He miraculously parted the sea. — Exodus 14
  • David Faces Goliath: While seasoned soldiers feared the giant Goliath, David trusted that God would give him victory. His confidence was not in his own strength but in God's power. — 1 Samuel 17
  • Daniel in the Lions’ Den: Daniel continued praying to God even when it became illegal. Despite the threat of death, he remained faithful and God protected him from the lions. — Daniel 6
  • Esther Risks Her Life: Esther was faced with a difficult choice: remain silent or risk her life by approaching the king to save her people. Trusting that God had placed her in that position for a purpose, she acted courageously. — Esther 4-5
  • Peter Walks on Water: Peter stepped out of the boat and walked toward Jesus on the water. As long as he kept his eyes on Christ, he remained steady. When he focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink. — Matthew 14:22-33
  • Mary Accepts God’s Plan: When the angel told Mary she would give birth to Jesus, she faced uncertainty, social stigma and many unanswered questions. Yet she responded with faith and obedience. — Luke 1:26-38

How To Trust God More Each Day

One of the most important steps in growing your faith is being honest with God about your doubts and struggles. Ignoring your fears or uncertainties often causes them to grow stronger. Instead, bring them before God in prayer. He is not intimidated by your questions and seeking Him honestly can strengthen your relationship with Him and deepen your trust over time.

While personal prayer and Scripture are essential, growing in faith is often strengthened through Christian community. GCU's Spiritual Life programs provide opportunities for worship, service and meaningful connections that can help encourage your faith journey.

There are many practical ways to grow closer to God and build a foundation of faith in your daily life:

  • Memorize Scripture during anxious seasons. When worry or uncertainty arises, remind yourself of God's character and promises through His Word. Verses about His faithfulness, love and provision can bring comfort and perspective when you need it most.
  • Keep a prayer journal. Writing out your prayers can help you process your thoughts, express your concerns and stay focused during prayer. Over time, it also becomes a meaningful record of God's faithfulness that you can look back on during future challenges.
  • Lean on your faith community. God never intended for us to walk through life alone. Sharing your struggles with trusted friends, mentors or fellow believers can provide encouragement, accountability and support when your faith feels weak.
  • Choose Scripture over endless scrolling. Many of us reach for our phones first thing in the morning or right before bed. While there is nothing wrong with staying connected, constantly consuming news and social media can sometimes increase stress and distraction. Starting or ending your day with Scripture instead can help center your thoughts on God, strengthen your faith and set a purposeful tone for the day ahead.

Growing in trust doesn't happen overnight. Like any relationship, it develops through consistent time, honest communication and experience. As you continue seeking God daily, you'll discover that faith is not about having all the answers, it's about learning to rely on the One who does.

How To Build a Habit of Trusting God

Building habits is hard for every person; even simple daily routines like brushing your teeth, folding laundry, answering emails or running errands can sometimes feel overwhelming. When life is stressful or uncertain, trusting God can feel just as difficult. Recognizing that struggle is important because it reminds us that we are human. Building new habits is challenging for everyone and spiritual habits are no exception.

The good news is that trust is not something you either have or do not have. It is something that grows over time. Every small decision to turn to God in prayer, surrender a worry or seek His guidance is a step toward deeper trust. Rather than expecting instant confidence in every situation, focus on developing a pattern of relying on God little by little. Over time, those small acts of faith become a foundation that can support you through larger challenges.

There is no one-size-fits-all formula for building trust in God. Some people growing in faith read the Bible daily, while others connect with God through prayer walks, journaling, worship music or conversations with fellow believers. Looking to others for inspiration can be helpful, but it is important to remember that your spiritual journey is unique. What helps someone else grow closer to God may not be the exact method that works best for you.

"I look to others for inspiration when I want to build a new habit. However, I do not try to copy them, as what works for them might not work for me. I want to reach God in my own way. Gaining inspiration can help motivate me but I do not want to be them."
— Kayleigh Shaw

Instead of comparing your progress to others, pay attention to the practices that encourage you to consistently spend time with God. The goal is not perfection but faithfulness. As you discover rhythms that fit naturally into your life, trusting God becomes less of an occasional response and more of a daily habit.

Signs Your Trust in God Is Growing

There will always be points where you may stumble in your faith or notice that you are not being as consistent with your relationship with Christ. There will be points where you feel overwhelmed, stressed or confused. We tend to be very hard on ourselves, not allowing ourselves to feel the grace of making mistakes. Stumbling can help improve our relationship with Christ. Changing our mindset and being kinder to oneself can drastically make a difference.

"Owning my mistakes has been one of the biggest challenges. No one wants to admit they are wrong or need help. But admitting to God that I need Him in my life makes me feel closer to Him every day. "
— Kayleigh Shaw

The number one sign that your trust in God is growing is reaching out to Him. Sharing your life with them, while yes, He knows our every step. Coming to Him first can provide you comfort in knowing that He has you.

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."
— Isaiah 26:3, NIV

Learning how to trust God and grow in faith is a lifelong journey, not a destination. There will be seasons of confidence and seasons of uncertainty, but each step of obedience, every honest prayer and every moment spent seeking God helps strengthen your relationship with Him. As you continue to place your trust in His guidance, you may discover a deeper sense of peace, purpose and confidence in His plan for your life.
