I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.
Psalm 119:5NIV
If you enjoy connecting with God through beautiful things, such as art or the wonders of creation, you may consider engaging in the practice of visio divina, a Latin phrase translating to “divine seeing.” It is a way to intentionally seek and worship God through the appreciation of creation.
This form of prayer is commonly done through artwork. Use the following steps as a guide for your own practice:
1. Select: Find an image or a painting that you find beautiful or resonates with you.
2. Pause: Take a moment to breathe and quiet your mind. Ask for God's presence and guidance during your time of reflection.
3. Gaze: Look at the art with open eyes and an open heart. Take your time. Allow your eyes to wander over the details without rushing.
4. Notice: Begin to make observations and consider what stands out to you. Ask yourself, what emotions does this evoke in me? How does this connect with my life? What might God be trying to communicate to me?
5. Respond: Finally, share any thoughts, feelings or questions with God, and thank him for meeting with you. What reminder do you want to take with you from the artwork?
As you continue to explore this practice, may you begin to see God more and more through the beauty around you.
