With such a variety of religions and Christian churches, from someone who is not that familiar with Jesus, many probably do not know the holy Trinity or what it means. It might seem confusing, the idea of three beings/entities being one God. However, it is simpler than you can imagine. The doctrine of the Trinity means that there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons — the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Stated differently, God is one in essence and three in person.(See disclaimer 1)
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
Jesus directly addresses people, saying they should go out and serve the Lord in all three names. This validates Jesus and the Holy Spirit in the Father.
Who Is the Father?
You might wonder why God is referred to as “the Father.” Mostly, it has to do with the fact that Jesus was born as a human, which is why He is referred to as the Son. He is part of God, sent down to walk with us. Often, we see God as a Father because we go to Him for guidance and wisdom. He is a Father figure to all of us, as we are His children.
"Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."
Who Is Jesus?
He is the Son of God and God in human form, so that we, as humans, can relate to God more personally. Jesus is our ultimate guide to how we should live our lives. He walked with us and lived a perfect life.
I think a lot of us forget He was tempted by sin, and His life was not easy, and yet He never fell into it and still made the ultimate sacrifice of dying for our sins so that we could come to know God and be forgiven. Jesus was constantly questioned and doubted that He was the human form of God. He constantly proved Himself, and yet many still did not believe in Him.
"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
“The Word” refers to Jesus Christ, “Became flesh,” which shows that He became human and understood human nature. This shows that God chose to experience human life not only to be more approachable and easily show God’s glory, but also to struggle.
What Is the Holy Spirit?
Many people focus only on God and Jesus; one of the hardest things to understand and identify is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the presence of God in the life of a believer. But this does not mean God separates Himself into three separate parts.(See disclaimer 2) The presence of the Holy Spirit can guide us to not only make moral decisions but also seek God in our lives and really listen to what he is doing in our lives as well.
Another aspect is that we listen only to our own thoughts because we think we know what is best for ourselves, showing that we are relying too much on our egos rather than listening to the Holy Spirit and God’s judgment.
"However, as it is written: What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard and what no human mind has conceived — the things God has prepared for those who love Him — these are the things God has revealed to us by His Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us."
Now this section is a lot to digest; however, it addresses some important elements, such as:
Bringing the Reality of the Trinity Into Your Life
The Trinity reminds us that God is relational by nature, and the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three separate persons in one essence that work cohesively together. This means it is more than just knowing God but walking with God daily.
Here is how you can apply the Trinity in your daily routine:
Don’t just learn about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit — invite them into your daily life.
