  • Health Promotion and Disease Prevention -
    Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health program will understand concepts of population health, including the basic processes, approaches, and interventions that address significant population health issues; the underlying science of human health and disease, including opportunities for promoting and protecting health across the life course; and the socioeconomic, behavioral, biological, environmental, and other factors that impact human health and contribute to health disparities.
    • Apply the determinants of health to evaluate strategies that promote the health and health literacy of populations.
    • Evaluate channels for disseminating educational messages to various populations.
    • Describe characteristics of effective health education campaigns.
    • Describe significant patterns, trends, and factors related to the spread and progression of chronic and infectious diseases.
  • Community Engagement -
    Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health program will be able to engage communities as active participants in public health programming through effective and culturally competent application of concepts and features of project planning, implementation, assessment, and evaluation.
    • Evaluate characteristics of cultural competence within the field of public health.
    • Apply the steps of program development including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
    • Examine strategies for developing collaborative and sustainable community partnerships to promote holistic well-being.
    • Advocate for public health interventions within communities.
  • Public Health Research and Analysis -
    Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health Program will be able to apply the basic concepts, methods and tools of public health data collection, use, and analysis, and articulate why evidence-based approaches are an essential part of public health practice.
    • Locate, use, evaluate, and synthesize public health information. (CEPH Foundational Competency)
    • Describe the role of public health informatics in tracking and improving population health.
    • Apply methods of public health data collection.
    • Evaluate evidence-based approaches to public health research and programming.

  • Public Health Systems -
    Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health program will be able to articulate the history, philosophy, and core values of public health; differentiate the fundamental characteristics and organizational structures of the U.S. health system; and explain basic legal, ethical, economic, and regulatory concepts related to health care and policy, including the roles, influence, and responsibility of various government branches and agencies.
    • Describe the history, core values, and function of public health in its evolution as a professional practice and health system.
    • Examine the structure of health care delivery systems.
    • Differentiate funding mechanisms for public health organizations, research, and programming.
    • Evaluate the influence of policy on health.
    • Describe the impact of globalization and global health initiatives on communities.
  • Professional Competence and Ethical Practice -
    Graduates of Grand Canyon University’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health program will apply ethical and professional standards of practice within organizations and the community, including effectively communicating public health information through technical and professional writing, the designing of culturally and socially appropriate evaluation tools, and the use of mass media and electronic technology.
    • Communicate public health information, in both oral and written forms, through a variety of media and to diverse audiences. (CEPH Foundational Competency)
    • Engage in professional networking opportunities.
    • Apply ethical standards in the collection, use, and dissemination of public health information and data.
