Additional Coursework Requirements

Post-Graduation Work Experience Requirements
The Virginia Board of Counseling requires an applicant for certification as a substance abuse counselor shall have had 2,000 hours of supervised experience in the practice of substance abuse counseling services. Supervision in Virginia shall be registered and approved by the board prior to the beginning of supervised experience in order to be counted toward certification. A minimum of 120 hours of the 240 hours of didactic training in substance abuse counseling shall be completed prior to registration of supervision. Professional Licensure Exam Requirements
The successful completion of the NCAC-I examination (NAADAC) is required for the Certified Substance Abuse Counselor certification in this location. However, an applicant shall meet the educational and experience requirements before submitting an application to the Board in order to sit for the examination.

The board requires fifteen hundred (1,500) hours of chemical dependency counseling for applicants with a master's or doctoral degree for full Substance Use Disorder Professional licensure in this location. Please note, a maximum of three years of accredited college or university work may be utilized to satisfy the three-year requirement of qualifying general work experience.
A minimum of 6000 hours (3 years) of work experience specific to addiction is still required. At least one year (2000 hours) of the 3 years of work experience specific to addiction must have been started after obtaining the Master's degree and completed under the clinical supervision of a professional licensed in a behavioral sciences/human resources discipline.

The successful completion of the Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor Exam (AADC) -- IC&RC is required for this license in this location.

The Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board allows a Provisional Addictions Therapist to continue progress, under the supervision of a designated qualified clinical supervisor and under the administrative supervision of an employer, towards satisfactory completion of the education, experience, and examination requirements for full Addictions Therapist licensure. The board requires a minimum of three thousand (3,000) hours of supervised clinical training/work experience in addictions therapy under the direct supervision of a designated qualified clinical supervisor completed over a period of not less than eighteen (18) months or more than thirty-six (36) months is required for all applicants for full Addictions Therapist licensure.
Professional Licensure Exam Requirements
The successful completion of the Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) -- NAADAC exam is required for full Addictions Therapist licensure in this state. However, no exam is required for Provisional Addictions Therapist licensure. An applicant for full Addictions Therapist licensure may complete the exam requirement while holding a Provisional Addictions Therapist license.
