Academic Unit Description

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) counseling academic unit consists of the clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) and school counseling (SC) programs and articulates its purpose through an overarching mission statement that focuses on best practices to equip counselors in training as change agents in a global society.

The mission of the counseling academic unit is to prepare counselors-in-training with the knowledge, skills and dispositional values to become competent global counselors and leaders.

Program Mission

Clinical mental health counseling mission statement:

The mission of the Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is to cultivate ethical, professional counselors to effectively assess, diagnose, treat and empower culturally diverse populations. This program fosters faith and learning throughout the curriculum to integrate models of human growth and development and evidence-based practices. Graduate students gain comprehensive knowledge and insight to become competent global professional counselors and leaders.

Objectives

Clinical mental health counseling program objectives are designed so that learners will:

  • Counselor Identity and Ethics: Develop best practices and counselor identity as informed by ethical and professional standards and GCU dispositional values
  • Diversity and Advocacy: Gain opportunities to practice ethically as advocates for social justice through exposure to multicultural counseling theories and experiential exercises that promote awareness of cultural bias and diverse worldviews
  • Human Growth and Development: Acquire knowledge and skills to meet the diverse needs of individuals in the context of human growth and development
  • Counseling & Helping Relationships: Cultivate counseling and helping skills by integrating counseling theories and research, engaging in community collaboration and outreach and developing skills to apply in professional and therapeutic relationships
  • Group Counseling and Group Work: Integrate theoretical foundations and consider dynamics and therapeutic factors to gain knowledge of theories, develop techniques, promote leadership skills and facilitate the therapeutic group process for diverse clients
  • Research and Program Evaluation: Acquire the knowledge and skills needed to identify, evaluate, and utilize research to inform best practices in counseling
  • Career Development: Attain the knowledge that prepares them to demonstrate skills in vocational counseling and the relationship between roles in career, life, school and mental health

Post-Graduation Work Experience Requirements

The Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling does not require post-graduation work experience for this license in this location. However, applicants for associate licensed counselor must furnish to the Board a plan for supervision by a Supervising Counselor. The Board requires 3,000 hours of supervised experience in professional counseling acceptable to the board for full Professional Counselor licensure in this location. An applicant may subtract 1,000 hours of the required professional experience for every 15 graduate semester hours obtained beyond the master’s degree, provided that those hours are clearly related to the field of professional counseling and are acceptable to the board. In no case may the applicant have less than 1,000 hours of the required professional supervised experience.


Professional Licensure Exam Requirements

The Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling does not require the completion of an exam for this license in this location. However, applicants for associate licensed counselor may opt for examination at the completion of their educational requirement or they may defer examination until the completion of the experience requirement. The successful completion of the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE) - NBCC is required for full Professional Counselor licensure in this location.

Post-Graduation Work Experience Requirements

The Alaska Board of Professional Counselors requires 3,000 hours of supervised experience over a period of at least 2 years under the supervision of a supervisor with at least 1,000 hours of direct counseling with individuals, couples, families, or groups and at least 100 hours of face-to-face supervision unless the Board approves supervision by telephonic or electronic means due to remote location of counselor for this license in this location.

American Samoa

Additional Training Requirements

The California Board of Behavioral Sciences requires a 12-clock hour California Law and Ethics course in order to qualify for this license in this location. Please be aware that this content is not included in this program. Students will not be eligible for Associate Professional Clinical Counselor registration in California without taking additional coursework in this area. Students seeking Associate Professional Clinical Counselor registration must take the required course from a school that holds a regional or national institutional accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, a school approved by the California BPPE, or an acceptable continuing education (CE) provider. For more information, students should speak with a Student Service Counselor and with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (http://www.bbs.ca.gov).

In addition, effective July 1, 2023, the California Board of Behavioral Science will begin requiring both applicants for licensure and licensees to have completed a minimum of three hours of training or coursework in the provision of mental health services via telehealth, which must include law and ethics related to telehealth. Please be aware that this content is not included in this program. The requirement can be met by taking a continuing education course from a provider that is acceptable to the Board. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences requires all applicants to have an active associate registration with the board in order to gain post-degree hours of supervised experience. The CABBS requires 3,000 post-degree hours of supervised clinical mental health experience related to the practice of professional clinical counseling performed over a period of not less than two years for full Professional Clinical Counselor licensure.

Post-Graduation Work Experience Requirements

The Delaware Board of Professional Counselors of Mental Health does not require post-graduation work experience for this license in this location. However, applicants must submit a written plan for acquiring the LPCMH experience requirements. The plan must be signed by the applicant’s proposed supervisor and supervisors must be acceptable to the Board. Please note, the Board requires completion of 3,200 hours of mental health counseling services as a LACMH over a period of no less than two (2) but no more than four (4) consecutive years for full LCMH licensure if you do not have 30 post-Masters credit hours in the counseling field.

Post-Graduation Work Experience Requirements

The Virginia Board of Counseling requires a 3,400-hour supervised residency in the role of a professional counselor working with various populations, clinical problems and theoretical approaches for this license in this location.
