Adjunct Faculty
Biography
Dr. John Butler earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Science from Texas A&M University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas Pan American, a Master of Education degree with an emphasis in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Brownsville, and a Doctor of Education Degree from the University of Houston with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction. Additionally, Dr. Butler has taken additional post-graduate coursework as required for Texas certification as a Mid-Management Administrator and Superintendent. Dr. Butler currently serves as the Dean of Academics and Chief Financial Officer for the Marine Military Academy, a private, non-profit, all male college preparatory school. In addition, he holds several adjunct instructor positions with universities offering online education opportunities in business, education technology, curriculum and instruction, and educational leadership. While employed by the Marine Military Academy, Dr. Butler held the positions of Assistant Dean, Science/Math Instructor, and Coach. He has worked in business as the manager of MTB Enterprises based in Houston, Texas. Dr. Butler has also served as an infantryman in the United States Army. His work and leadership experience has taught him that effective leadership is best accomplished through action. Commitment and passion are key to the success of any project. Dr. John Butler finds teaching extremely rewarding as it provides the opportunity to share in the personal and professional growth of those interested in bettering their own lives and the lives of those they are associated with. Teaching is a sharing experience that leaves both the teacher and the student better off than they were prior to their encounter. Dr. Butler also believes the strategy that is most successful in his online courses is to use a socratic methodology that allows students to discover the knowledge and skills that are relevant to them based on their interests and needs. His role is to facilitate discussion, reflection, and to guide students through a course. John’s personal interests are based on family and faith. Him and his family take every possible opportunity to hunt, fish, waterski, swim, surf, and engage in the world around us. He has lived in West Germany, Texas, and Georgia. Dr. Butler has also visited almost all countries in Western Europe, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and China. Having experienced many places and cultures, both domestically and abroad, he has become convinced that geography is much less important than who you are with and how you choose to live your life.
