What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo means “the fifth of May.” The holiday commemorates the Battle of Puebla, which took place between the Mexican Army and forces from France in the year 1862. The battle was eventually won by the Mexican Army on May 5, marking this day as an important part of the country’s history. Today, people in the U.S. love to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by appreciating Mexican-American culture.
