Pennsylvania emerges as a standout state for early career job seekers, boasting a remarkable 61.24% of all job listings classified as early career.1 This statistic underscores Pennsylvania’s commitment to providing accessible entry points into various industries, laying a solid foundation for potential career advancement.
Following closely behind, Texas tops the list with 57.22% of total job offerings listed as early career.2 As one of the states with the highest number of job listings and early career job listings, the Lone Star state stands out as a hub for young professionals ready to enter the workforce.
Tennessee secures the third position with 56.15% of its job listings categorized as early career.3 This statistic reflects Tennessee's dedication to nurturing talent and fostering a supportive environment where new professionals can thrive and contribute meaningfully to their respective fields.
Overall, the job listing data reveals that a significant portion of the nation’s job market — nearly half, totaling 49.42% — consists of early career positions. This widespread availability highlights a nationwide commitment to welcoming and developing new talent across various sectors and regions. In today’s dynamic job market, early career opportunities are essential for launching careers and fostering professional growth. When embarking on a job search, whether you're switching careers or simply seeking more experience, job boards are a common first step in finding the right fit.
Of course, not every city or state is equal when it comes to career opportunities. We analyzed LinkedIn job postings to identify where most early career positions are available across the country. Continue reading for our exploration into early career job opportunities across the United States, along with insights into the regions where these opportunities are most abundant for new and aspiring professionals in the workforce.
To identify the states with the most early career job opportunities, we began by examining all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Using LinkedIn job listings, we conducted searches by state to determine the total number of available positions, further narrowing the results to focus on 'entry-level' or early career opportunities. Additionally, we analyzed job listings with filters related to important job search factors such as salary, location (on-site, hybrid or remote) and industry.
While employers may categorize certain postings as 'entry-level,' it’s important to recognize these roles often require advanced education or training, especially in fields like healthcare, engineering, IT, accounting, finance and education. This reflects the distinct difference between simply landing a job and the beginning of a professional career, which often requires a higher level of expertise and qualifications. In many cases, even entry-level positions in these and other industries require a degree or relevant experience to meet the expectations of the role.
Navigating the landscape of early career job opportunities involves understanding where these positions are prevalent and which industries are actively seeking new talent. Our analysis unveils insights into where aspiring professionals may find promising entry points into specific industries.
Opportunities abound in Alaska's vast expanse for those venturing into information technology (IT) or engineering fields.4 Alaska leads the nation in offering early career positions in these critical sectors, showcasing a commitment to technology and innovation. Moreover, our study found that Alaska offers the most remote early career jobs as well — something to consider for young professionals not willing to relocate!
Similarly, Ohio stands out as a hub for early career opportunities in two industries. For young professionals seeking careers in either management or manufacturing, Ohio could be an opportune place to start your career.5 With a robust industrial base and a need for business professionals, Ohio provides rich opportunities for aspiring managers and manufacturing professionals to begin their careers.
For those passionate about making a difference in healthcare, New York emerges as the premier destination for early career job seekers in this vital industry.6 From hospitals to community health centers, New York offers a wealth of opportunities to launch meaningful careers in healthcare delivery and support services.
Nevada leads the nation in early career job opportunities within the education sector.7 Aspiring educators and administrators can find a multitude of roles in Nevada’s educational institutions, fostering the next generation of learners and leaders in the Silver State.
Finally, we find that Rhode Island shines as the top state for early career jobs in finance,8 offering opportunities for aspiring financial analysts, advisors and professionals looking to enter the financial services industry. Rhode Island’s commitment to financial literacy and economic growth can provide a solid foundation for career advancement in finance.
