My Experience as a Communications Major at GCU

Coming into college, I did not know what to expect. I had an idea of what I wanted to study, but was still unsure about my future as a college student. However, that all changed when I stepped into my first communications course at GCU.

As I approach my last semester, I would like to reflect on some of my experiences at GCU, specifically as a communications major.

In the Classroom

The minute I stepped into my first communications class at GCU, I felt a strong sense of community among the students and the professor. Many of the students were older than me and had been in the program for a while, but they were all kind, supportive and willing to give advice. My professor made me feel like my contribution to the class mattered, which encouraged me to dive even deeper into my studies.

Overall, I would say the community that exists among the students and faculty in the communications program is what makes it unique. Going into college, I never expected to form relationships with my peers and professors the way that I have. This strong sense of community creates a positive classroom experience, as each student is encouraged to participate and engage with the class material. The communications faculty have gone above and beyond when it comes to making the classroom engaging, and they are always more than willing to provide assistance when needed.

Extracurricular Activities

In addition to a dynamic classroom experience, I have also been blessed to have opportunities to further my studies and form relationships outside of the classroom. Book discussions, game nights and holiday parties are just some of the many ways communications majors come together to build community and discuss the things we are passionate about.

In addition, I have also had the opportunity to become involved with Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association’s official honor society. Through this experience, I have learned about what it takes to work together as a team. As the former secretary and current treasurer of the club, I have also learned valuable lessons about leadership.

Preparing for the Future

Thanks to my communications degree from GCU, I am excited to see what the future holds. I truly believe that my experience in this program has shaped me into both a better student and a better person altogether. My education has prepared me to work as a student worker in the digital marketing department at GCU, as well as complete several internships.

Looking forward, I am optimistic about where my degree will take me next. Whether this means furthering my education by earning a master’s degree or entering the workforce, I have my experience at GCU to thank!
