According to the results of a survey conducted by American Association of Colleges of Nursing involving 647 nursing schools, 41.1% of hospitals and other healthcare settings require new hires to hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing. There was also a strong preference for BSN program graduates with 82.4% of employers expressing this preference.3 This further strengthens the argument that being a BSN-prepared nurse can give you the credentials you need to become a strong candidate for opportunities that you may not have had previously.

Is There a Demand for Qualified Registered Nurses?
There is a significant and ongoing demand for qualified registered nurses. The U.S. has an aging population that is expected to continue to exert significant stress on the healthcare system. As baby boomers grow older and their need for healthcare increases, the shortage of qualified nurses is expected to intensify.
By 2030, the United States Census Bureau projects one in five Americans will be retirement age.4 The National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses conducted by the Health Resources and Services Administration found that the average age of an RN is 50.5 This indicates that at the time when older adults will have an increased need for healthcare, more RNs than ever will be retiring, further escalating the need for qualified RNs.
In addition to needing more nurses to help older adults, more nurses are expected to be needed to care for those with chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. This may create job growth at long-term care facilities and long-term rehabilitation centers.
As of September 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook estimates job growth for registered nurses to increase by about 9% from 2020 to 2030, accounting for an estimated increase of 276,800 jobs in the field.6
