Trending Faith: Are Soldiers Breaking One of the Commandments?

Dean of Students and Grand Canyon University Pastor Tim Griffin, along with Dean of the College of Theology Jason Hiles, PhD, sat down on this week’s Trending Faith to discuss the commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.”

Are soldiers who defend their country disobeying this commandment?

Dr. Hiles gives an example from the book of Luke, in which John the Baptist instructs soldiers not to extort money and to be happy with their wages. However, the book of Luke doesn’t say anything about engaging in acts of violence if soldiers are defending their country.

‘I think there is quite a bit of reason to believe that it is a noble profession to defend your country,’ Dr. Hiles says.
