Weekly Devotional: Being Content in Our Season of Waiting

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” (Psalm 62:5)

As humans, we always want. We want:

• More
• Different
• What others have
• What’s on the other side of the fence

And most commonly:

• To be in the next phase of life

We grow up always wanting to be in that next season. When we are 12, we cannot wait to be 13 and enter into our teenage years. When we are 13, we can’t wait to be 16 and learn how to drive and go to prom. When we get to high school, we yearn for college. When we get to college, we want to start our career and get our dream job. Once we can check that off our list, we want a significant other to settle down, then marriage, then kids, then retirement, etc.

Sometimes, it can feel like everyone else is onto the next thing and the next phase in life, while you’re just stuck. Waiting.

Hebrews 11:1-14 really speaks to this season of waiting and the promise that God has for us. It says, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise.” This promise, as told in Genesis 12:1, was made to Abraham by God. In fact, God gave him multiple promises. Were they fulfilled right away? No. In fact, Abraham waited 25 years before his wife, Sarah, gave birth to their first child. Another promise was never fulfilled to him directly. Instead, the promise passed onto his offspring, as told in Genesis 12:7: “Then the Lord appeared to Abraham and said, ‘To your offspring I will give this land.’”

Abraham had a long season of waiting – a season that lasted his whole life. He never got to see fulfilled the promises that God made him, but as it says in Hebrews 11:13, though we may not like it, we may never see our promises fulfilled or lived out. Yet, God promises the fulfillment of them.

We may stay in this season of waiting for a day, a week, a year or a lifetime. We can be so focused on this life that we forget to see the bigger picture: Heaven is the ultimate longing (Hebrews 11:10). We have to set our minds on things above and what we cannot see.

So, during this season of waiting, instead of longing for the next big event that is supposed to happen in your life, do what Abraham did: Praise God and follow Him. We should be willing to give God our all in every season, no matter the circumstances! Even through the wondering and waiting, He teaches us important and eye-opening things that show us how great He and His promises are!

A prayer for everyone who is in a season of waiting:

“Father, sometimes the wait is long and impatience gets the better of me. Forgive me and grant me the patience to wait for your blessings upon my life and not question your power. In your name, I say, Amen.”
