She has already used AI to plan meals, compare products, organize a vacation, rewrite a confusing email and figure out why the washing machine is making that strange noise again. AI has become one of those tools she reaches for without thinking too much about it.
But this is not about her washing machine. This is her first classroom. These are real students with real personalities, real needs and real struggles. As she looks over her blank lesson plan template, she wonders how much AI can help her and what parts of teaching still need to come from her. Could it save her time? Yes. Could it help her think through differentiation, parent communication and classroom organization? Probably. But could it make students feel known, encouraged, challenged and safe? That part still belongs to her.

That kind of question comes from knowing the student, and that is why the teacher’s personal input matters.
A team meeting, parent conversation, counselor or specialist may still be needed, and AI should never replace those supports. But while Ms. Lopes is waiting for the next step, AI can help her think through possible patterns, better questions to ask or simple classroom supports that she can try right away.

But it cannot look a student in the eye and say, “I know this is hard, but I believe you can do it.” It cannot know the student’s tone, body language, fears, patterns and small victories. Those details come from relationship, presence and time spent with students.
For future teachers, becoming indispensable does not mean avoiding AI. It means using AI wisely while becoming stronger at the things technology cannot do. The teachers who matter most in an AI world will not be the ones who simply know the newest tech tool. They will be the ones who use the tool effectively and still never forget the child.
How To Teach Students To Use AI Ethically
