To pursue a career in cybersecurity, a bachelor's degree in a computer science field is typically required, specifically in information security.1 This degree provides a strong foundation in relevant technical skills and knowledge. Additionally, having related work experience is beneficial. Employers often value practical experience and may prefer candidates who have gained hands-on skills in cybersecurity through internships, projects or previous employment.6 Obtaining professional certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) are also highly regarded in the field.

The duration to obtain a cybersecurity degree varies depending on the level of the degree and program structure. A bachelor's degree in cybersecurity requires a total of 120 credits for completion with most of the classes being 15 weeks in length. While a master's degree requires a total of 34 credits for completion with most of the classes being eight weeks in length.
