Admission Requirements

If you are interested in joining the GCU Honors College, we invite you to apply for the following academic year. Your application will be reviewed holistically, based on both your academic achievements and your extracurricular activities.

Admission Criteria

Application deadline for 2018-19 is July 1, 2018.

To be eligible to apply for the Honors College, you must meet the following criteria:

Incoming Freshmen

Competency requirements:

  • Admission into the university

Automatic acceptance, no secondary application required:

  • Cumulative high school GPA of 3.9 or greater
  • OR ACT composite score of 31 or greater
  • OR SAT score (combined verbal and math) of 1410 or greater

Eligible to apply at gcu.edu/honors:

  • Cumulative high school GPA of 3.6 or greater
  • OR ACT composite score of 27 or greater
  • OR SAT score (combined verbal and math) of 1225 or greater
  • Demonstrated passion for community service and leadership

Transfer Students

Competency requirements:

  • Admission into the university

Automatic acceptance, no secondary application required:

  • Cumulative college GPA of 3.5 or greater
  • Actively enrolled in a college honors program or Phi Theta Kappa chapter

Eligible to apply at gcu.edu/honors:

  • Cumulative college GPA of 3.5 or greater
  • Earned at least 24 or more college credits prior to seeking admission into the Honors College
  • Demonstrated passion for community service and leadership

If you are an incoming freshman and eligible for the Direct Chancellor or Direct President Award, you may waive the honors application and automatically enroll in the Honors College. Contact your university counselor for more information.

Students graduating with an international baccalaureate diploma may also qualify for a Direct Start Chancellor Award and automatic enrollment into the Honors College.

Program Requirements

The Honors College is committed to helping you get the most out of your GCU experience. Therefore, in order to stay in the Honors College, you will need to meet certain eligibility requirements. These requirements are set in place to ensure a standard of excellence is met or exceeded by all students in the program. Requirements are broken out into curricular and co-curricular activities.

Incoming Freshmen

Incoming freshmen will need to meet the following requirements to stay in the Honors College.

Curricular (20 credits)

  • 8-12 credits of honors general education coursework
  • 8-12 credits of honors coursework in your major

Co-curricular

  • Four mandatory non-credit bearing symposia experiences are required annually throughout the program, with one occurring each year during the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior spring semesters. Students on a three- or 3.5-year graduation track will have an alternative opportunity provided in place of the fourth symposium.
  • You must maintain a 3.25 GPA at GCU.

Transfer Students

Transfer students are required to complete three areas of coursework, a total of 16 or 17 honors credits.

Curricular (16-17 credits)

  • 8 credits of honors general education coursework
  • 8-9 credits of honors coursework in your major

Co-curricular

  • A number of non-credit bearing symposia experiences are required annually, depending on which year you enter the program.
  • You must maintain a 3.25 GPA at GCU.

  • An honors essay: must be typed and no less than 500 words
  • Resume: updated resume to include both employment and community service

The 2018 Honors College Academic Excellence Scholarship is awarded to high-achieving students who have demonstrated impressive academic achievement and servant leadership. Multiple awards are available and amounts may vary.

The scholarship selection process includes two rounds. First, the Honors College committee will review application materials. Select applicants will be invited to participate in round two, which includes a group and individual interview conducted at Grand Canyon University.

Incoming Freshmen

Scholarship eligibility criteria includes all of the following:

  • 3.75 cumulative, unweighted high school GPA or greater 
  • Eligible for the Direct President or Direct Chancellor Academic Scholarship 
  • Applicant displays a commitment to academic excellence, service, leadership and research

Transfer Students

Scholarship eligibility criteria includes all of the following:

  • 3.75 cumulative, college GPA or greater 
  • Currently enrolled and actively participating in a collegiate honors program 
  • Applicant displays a commitment to academic excellence, service, leadership and research

Applicants must have applied and been accepted to Grand Canyon University for general admissions prior to applying for the 2018 Honors College Academic Excellence Scholarship.
