“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living. Most people do not work on their dream. Why? Because of fear – fear of failure and even fear of success.

Know that you are more important and more powerful than any fear that you have. In all honesty, “what” and “if” are two words as non-threatening as words can be, but put them together, side-by-side, and they have the power to hold you back from reaching your full potential.

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” – Steve Jobs

I do not know what dream you have or what it entails, but I do know that it is possible. Sometimes, we find it difficult to say, “I can do that.” But, what we should say is, “It is possible.” It is possible that I can make my dream a reality as long as I work on it day in and day out! When you have a goal that you are striving for, one that takes you out of your comfort zone, you will find talents and abilities you were not aware of before.

Life will knock us down, but we can choose whether or not to stand back up. During school, days will come where you have been studying for hours on end. You take a test and realize your best was not good enough. Know that it is okay to have a break down – you are human. Just do not unpack and live there. Cry it out and then refocus on where you are headed. Failure does not come from falling down – it comes from not getting back up.

When you think of quitting, think about why you started. The field of medicine is not an easy field to go into; it will take hard work, dedication and some sacrifices. It will take countless hours of discipline, passion, determination and courage, but know that, in the end, you will be able to save someone’s life. This profession has people’s lives at stake, and it is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. There will be days where you just want to give up, and there will be days where you debate about changing majors. Stop focusing on how stressed you are and remember how blessed you are.

When a person decides to go into the medical field, they make the most important decision of their lives. They choose to dedicate themselves to the care of others.

Best of luck on the journey ahead.
