Faculty Spotlight: Frank Dubuy

Meet Frank G. Dubuy, an adjunct Professor of Music at Grand Canyon University. His teaching assignments include Director of the GCU Wind Ensemble/Chamber Winds, Student Teacher Supervisor, Band and Education Methods classes. Prior to assuming this position he was Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Hamilton High School, Chandler, AZ where he directed the orchestra and jazz studies programs. Prior to teaching in Arizona, he was an Assistant Professor of Music, Coordinator of Instrumental Music, Director of Bands and Director of the Opera Orchestra at Southeastern Louisiana University, in Hammond, LA.

Before his return to music education, he served over 20 years as an Army band officer. His assignments included Associate Bandmaster of The US Amy Band (Pershing’s Own) in Washington, D.C. where he directed the Army Strings, Army Chorus and Army Chorale. He regularly conducted performances at The White House, State Department and Department of Defense activities and was executive officer of The US Army Field Band and director of The US Army Soldiers Chorus (the official touring ensembles of the US Army, touring nationally and internationally in the far east and Europe). He was also Commander and Conductor of The US Military Academy Band and director of the US Military Academy Cadet Glee Club, in West Point, NY.

He holds advanced degrees in conducting from the University of Calgary and Texas Christian University where he also served on the conducting staff of the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra. Col. Dubuy has conducted honor ensembles and conducting clinics throughout the United States and presented educational methods clinics at the National Association for Music Education In-Service Conference, in Nashville, TN and the Louisiana State Music Educators Association annual all-state and in-service conference.

He has been the featured clinician at the Tennessee Conductor’s Symposium in Nashville, TN and at the University of Wisconsin Madison Conductor’s Conference. He has developed and presented workshops for high school students on leadership in the performing arts. Col. Dubuy is a member of The National Association for Music Education, The American Bandmaster Association, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmaster Fraternity, Arizona Band and Orchestra Director’s Association and The Arizona Music Educators Association.

Colonel Dubuy’s focus at GCU is to prepare music education majors for careers as music teachers in a wide variety of educational institutions. Supervising student teachers permits him to bring in a vast background in both music and education to each student on a personal and individual basis. During his tenure at GCU, all graduates who have sought teacher positions have been hired through their preparation in classes and practical understanding of the interview process and requirements for success in the music classroom.
