Like other nonprofits, NGOs carry out humanitarian work. However, they operate in countries other than the U.S. (although they may be based in the U.S.). In addition, an NGO generally focuses on “big picture” issues such as famine relief or refugee assistance, whereas nonprofits may sometimes work on a smaller, community-wide scale.
