Why a Career Matters More Than a Degree for Remote Work

If you’re looking for flexible career paths and hoping to work online, it’s important to note that a specific degree does not guarantee a remote or hybrid job. Remote work opportunities are contingent on the field you enter and the company you work for. However, choosing a bachelor’s degree that aligns with these remote-friendly careers can help give you the foundation to pursue flexible opportunities. Select a degree that prepares you with the right skills for remote work. It may also be worth looking for programs that emphasize digital collaboration, project-based learning and technology-driven tools that mimic the remote work environment.

Remote and work from home (WFH) jobs can be appealing and are becoming more commonplace across various industries.1 These jobs often allow for increased flexibility and can provide more extensive opportunities to those who are not geographically located where they wish to work. If this appeals to you, you may be wondering, What can I go to school for to work from home? Certain fields may be more naturally suited to hybrid or virtual work, and the right degree can help you prepare to step into those roles.

Start Your Path to a Remote-Friendly Career at GCU

Remote and hybrid work is shaping the future of business and technology.5 GCU offers bachelor’s degrees that can prepare you for flexible career paths in exciting industries. Explore your options and discover how a degree from GCU can help you take the next step toward a career that fits your lifestyle.

Remote Work Careers FAQs

The following frequently asked questions and answers may provide you with more clarity on pursuing remote or virtual career opportunities.

Can I Work Remotely With Any Degree?

Not every career offers the same level of remote or hybrid flexibility, but various degrees can lead to roles that may be performed virtually, depending on the employer and industry. For example, fields like business, communications, IT, marketing and software development can provide opportunities for remote or hybrid work because tasks can be completed digitally. On the other hand, careers that rely heavily on in-person interaction or hands-on work, such as healthcare, are less likely to be remote. Ultimately, your ability to work remotely depends more on the specific job and organization than on your degree alone.

What Is the Easiest Career To Start Remotely?

Careers that are primarily computer-based or that are easily mobile are typically strong contenders for remote work. These can include jobs in fields that depend heavily on digital tools and communication, such as customer support, social media, digital marketing and IT. The best fit for you as a new graduate will depend on your career readiness and the knowledge and skills gained from your specific program.

Are These Careers Needed?

Yes, many remote and hybrid-friendly jobs are experiencing faster-than-average growth across industries. One such field is information technology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for computer and information technology occupations is projected to be much faster than the average growth rate from 2024 to 2034, with an estimated increase of about 317,700 job openings per year.3

Do I Need Experience To Land a Remote Job After Graduation?

While having experience can help, it’s not always a strict requirement for landing a remote job after graduation.4 Many entry-level remote positions are designed for recent graduates to focus on skill development and on-the-job learning rather than requiring extensive prior experience. Job titles that include terms such as “coordinator” or “assistant” are often good places to start when researching entry-level jobs that do not require experience.

Top Remote Work Fields and Best Work From Home Careers

Here are some of the top career fields that can offer positions in hybrid or remote formats, along with relevant GCU bachelor’s degrees that can help support your preparation:2

Information Technology (IT)

Technical support can often easily be delivered virtually, helping businesses and individuals from all over the country troubleshoot technology challenges. Degree options such as a BS in Information Technology or BS in Cybersecurity can prepare you for careers in systems management, cybersecurity and IT support.

Software Development

Software development is another field that easily accommodates remote work because it is universally accessible by computer. A BS in Software Development provides education in coding, systems design and problem-solving that may translate to hybrid and fully remote roles in software development.

Digital Marketing

Many marketing teams have the opportunity to collaborate remotely, often utilizing virtual video calls and instant messaging for constant communication. These teams focus on content strategy, SEO, social media and online campaigns for a client or an array of clientele. A BS in Marketing and Advertising can help you gain the skills to build effective campaigns and analyze performance in digital environments while working remotely.

Communications and Media

Many communications roles, from writing and journalism to corporate communications and public relations, are compatible with hybrid or remote arrangements. A BA in Communications or BA in Professional Writing for New Media can equip you with relevant technical writing skills and media strategies that can be transferable to a variety of WFH careers.

Business

With many organizations managing distributed teams and conducting business around the country, business professionals such as managers and aspiring entrepreneurs have opportunities to take advantage of remote work environments. Degrees such as a BS in Business Administration and BS in Entrepreneurial Studies can provide leadership, organizational and business analytics skills essential to these positions.
